Technology giant Intel has joined forces with the company Micron, known for the production of NAND and DRAM memory chips. Together, the companies plan to significantly increase the volumes of solid-state drives (SSDs) available on the market. Specially for this, a special 3D NAND technology was developed, which allows storing up to 32 GB (256 Gbit) of data in MLC mode and up to 48 GB (384 Gbit) of data in TLC mode on a single chip.
Here it is necessary to recall what these abbreviations mean to all not familiar. Solid state drives can now be divided into three categories: SLC - single-layer memory cells (each transistor with floating gate stores only 1 bit of information), MLC - multilayer memory cells (2 bits per transistor) and TLC - three-layer memory cells (3 bits per transistor ). You must understand that the drive is the more expensive the more layers are used to store information. Technology TLC is still not widely used in the world, but gradually it will replace its predecessors, as it usually happens in the world of computer components.
Increasing the density of data storage reduces the size of chips, which automatically leads to an increase in the volume of solid-state drives. Intel and Micron claim that very soon they will be able to introduce a 2.5-inch drive with a capacity of up to 10 terabytes. The existing solid-state drives have a maximum capacity of 1-1.5 terabytes. Reduced solid-state drives for ultrabukov, according to Intel, will be smaller than a plate of chewing gum, but at the same time they can hold up to 3.5 terabytes of data. SSD for ultrabukov to date, as a rule, do not exceed the mark of 512 gigabytes.
Memory, created using 3D NAND technology, has already proved its efficiency and efficiency. 256 Gbit chips have passed all the necessary tests, and 384 Gbit chips will begin testing closer to the end of the spring of 2015. Both versions of the memory should go into production before the end of this year and appear in the form of drives on the shelves of stores as early as the beginning of 2016.
