The iFixit website experts finally got to the prototype of the new Steam Machine gaming system from Valve and disassembled it into its component parts. Let us and we will look inside this mysterious device.
So, as a result of the “opening” of the Steam Machine, we can finally find out the exact characteristics of the individual components of this computer, as well as shed light on many questions that interest us.
The game controller is easy to understand. The fact that the controller is completely devoid of batteries turned out to be a shock for the iFixit team. Yes, only a wired connection using a USB cable. There are a lot of buttons and two giant touch-panels on the front of the controller, four triggers on the top, and two oblong buttons on the back, resembling the gearshift keys on some game steering wheels.
The back panel of the gaming computer is a rather common sight for PC users. Surprised by the presence of long outdated PS / 2 ports for mouse and keyboard. Two USB 2.0 ports and four USB 3.0 ports. Standard HDMI port, dual-link DVI ports and Display Port. The output of the sound on the receiver allows the optical port S / PDIF. There is also an eSATA port, a standard Ethernet connector and even connectors for an external Wi-Fi antenna. Nowhere are the multi-colored holes for outputting sound to ordinary computer speakers and a subwoofer.
Components are packed into the case as accurately as possible and tight to each other. Immediately catches the modular type of assembly device. Any part can be easily removed and replaced with a new one. Everything is fenced off with special plastic bulkheads and lids.
As a repository of information, the Steam Machine uses a Seagate hybrid 1TB hard drive. The speed of the SSD-drive and the amount of conventional HDD - these are the advantages that provides users with a hybrid hard disk format.
The video card used in this gaming computer is a ZOTAC GeForce GTX 780 with 3 GB of GDDR5 standard memory. This card contains 2304 stream processors operating at a frequency of 863 MHz (900 MHz during overclocking). Its memory operates at a frequency of 6008 MHz.
So we got to the most interesting thing - to the motherboard. It is a Mini-ITX board, in which two strips of RAM produced by Crucial Ballistix Sport of 8 GB each are stuck. There are no slots for additional memory on the motherboard, and, apparently, this board does not support large volumes at all.
The heart of this computer is the CPU Intel Core i5-4570, working at a clock frequency of 3.2 GHz (capable of overclocking to 3.6 GHz). Its cooling is occupied by the Zalman CNPS 2X cooler - it is big and rather quiet.
On the front surface of the Steam Machine is only one giant power button with a very nice backlight.
As a power supply, the Valve gaming computer uses a 450W SilverStone SST-ST45SF-G. The maximum temperature of its heating does not exceed 40 degrees Celsius at round-the-clock work 24 hours 7 days a week. And again, almost silent cooler.
Specialists portal iFixit Steam Machine put a score of 9 out of 10 in terms of maintainability. It is easy to disassemble, repair or replace defective parts, and then it is just as easy to assemble everything back.
By the way, having calculated the average cost of all components, experts calculated its approximate cost. So are you ready to hear the price tag? The first Steam Machine revision, which Valve sent out to the first 300 lucky ones, costs about $ 1,300. Not bad when compared to other gaming PCs, but significantly more expensive if you put it on a par with gaming consoles like the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. And what do you say about this price tag?
