Unusual HP computer confuses reality

HP Sprout

Despite the fact that the new computer company Hewlett-Packard is more like an adult toy, it is mainly designed for work, not for entertainment. Perhaps even this computer opens a new era of input devices.

HP Sprout is a touch candy bar based on the operating system Windows 8.1, the main feature of which is something like a visor. The device, installed just above the display, is called the HP Illuminator and consists of a 3D scanner, a camera and a projector for transferring images from the screen to a sensor surface, designed as a 20-inch carpet.

The presentation of the novelty took place at the HP event in New York in the presence of many journalists, including the Wired newspaper. Hewlett-Packard Company describes its new computer as the first product in the line of "mixed reality" devices, which seeks to unite the real and virtual environments.

Not surprisingly, a similar product was developed by HP. Last year the company released a number of computers and peripherals using Leap Motion technology.

Although the HP Sprout computer is equipped with a physical keyboard and mouse, most of the work is done with the fingers, a stylus and a waterproof mat, which can also be projected with virtual keys. Journalists noted that they did not expect such convenience of working with a virtual keyboard.

In addition to projecting the second screen onto the surface where the keyboard is normally located, the HP Illuminator can scan documents and physical objects with a 14.6-megapixel module using Intel RealSense technology. The company also released a toolkit that allows developers to embed Illuminator functions into their applications.

For example, Microsoft has already implemented a feature in its office applications suite that allows you to scan, recognize and insert printed text into a document. In addition, the system allows you to quickly add scanned images to PowerPoint and Word documents.

Initially, the computer offers 2D scanning capabilities, but by mid-2015, HP promises to release tools for 3D scanning and modeling.

During the presentation of its new product, HP noted that Sprout is intended for use by people of creative specialties, such as artists, designers, photographers, and also for team work in real time.

As for everything else, at its core Sprout is a traditional computer. The machine uses a 4-core Intel Core i7 processor with a clock speed of 3.2 GHz, 8 gigabytes of RAM, a hybrid HDD / SSD-storage of 1 terabyte and graphics of NVIDIA GeForce GT 745A with 2 gigabytes of RAM. The main LCD-display with 1080p-resolution has a diagonal of 23 inches. There are also HDMI connectors, USB 3.0 / 2.0, SD / SDHC / SDXC memory card reader and stereo speakers.

To date, HP Sprout is offered as a complete system - it will not be possible to buy an Illuminator and a mat separately for use with other Windows computers.

Sprout is already available for pre-order on the HP website for $ 1,900. Deliveries are scheduled for November 9. The same day the computer will appear in stores Best Buy, B & H and Microsoft Store.
