US President Barack Obama signed a government decree demanding the creation by 2025 of the fastest supercomputer in the world. Earlier in the US, the research program of the "Strategic Computer Initiative" (NSCI) was adopted, the task of which is to support the development of new computer technologies and the development of new exaflop computers that will allow the country to perform well in a high-tech arms race.
The new supercomputer will be designed and developed by the federal government, and then used in a wide variety of areas. One such field of application will be, for example, NASA. A new supercomputer will be used by the agency to better understand the impact of turbulence on aircraft design. Another area of application can be numerous medical research.
In the list of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world, most places are occupied by American machines, but the main laurels are for countries like China and Japan. The Chinese supercomputer Tianhe-2 takes the first line of the most powerful supercomputers for two and a half years in a row, which can not but irritate American specialists.
With the support of the federal government behind it, NSCI hopes to get ahead of its competitors and set a new level in the field of high-performance computing. But if we take into account how many difficulties we have to face our planet, even exaflop computers will take a long time to find their solutions.
