Microsoft patented a modular personal computer

We hear about the modular smartphone over the past few years, a modular tablet and a modular smart clock, too, no one is surprised. But how did it happen that it did not occur to anyone to patent a modular personal computer? In Russia, the vast majority of users prefer to self-upgrade their PCs, but in the West, many people find it much easier to purchase a completely new system unit to replace the outdated. Microsoft decided it was time to put an end to this.

Microsoft has applied for this patent in July 2015, and only now this application was approved and satisfied. One of the authors of the patent is Tim Eskolin, the chief industrial designer of the corporation, who, among others, has led the team that gave the world the Surface tablet, as well as accessories accompanying it. Given that this tablet slowly but surely is gaining popularity among users, it was a matter of time when Microsoft decided to develop this direction of its activities even further.

If you remember, not so long ago, Redmond Corporation has already introduced another modular device - the Xbox One Elite Controller game controller, which any gamer can customize with the help of the replacement parts included. And even earlier, at the CES 2014, Microsoft Corporation helped develop a PC game called Project Christine from Razer. Last September, Acer introduced the modular PC Revo Build Mini PC at a price of 225 dollars, which probably pushed Microsoft to take decisive action, so far no one has occupied this market.

You can see in the illustrations accompanying the patent that the corporation represents a modular computer as something consisting of layers or boxes containing certain components inside. For example, one layer carries the processor and memory, while the other one is responsible for displaying the image on the monitor, and the third one contains additional modules. Of course, this patent does not prove that Microsoft will necessarily build its own modular PC, but the corporation now has a tangible trump card in its sleeve, allowing it to sue any manufacturer of such modular devices.
