For the first time in history, two quantum computers have come together face to face in the ring for the title of champion. Scientists have prepared a series of experiments that were to identify the winner among quantum computers created by the efforts of engineers from the University of Maryland, as well as IBM. The same algorithms were run on both computers, after which the specialists selected the leader of each stage of the competition. And these results, it should be noted, turned out to be rather ambiguous.
A quantum computer manufactured by IBM was much faster than its colleague, made at the University of Maryland. How much faster? Yes, almost 1000 times, which is impressive, is not it? But there is one nuance. Despite its speed, this computer demonstrated a much less impressive percentage of the accuracy of calculations. Quantum computer from Maryland gave the correct answer in 77.1% of cases, while IBM computer was accurate only in 35.1% of its calculations. Now go and understand now - who is the winner in this historic battle.
Two computers were created on the basis of two different technologies. Scientists from the University of Maryland used ytterbium ions, controlled by a laser and an electromagnetic trap, and IBM specialists developed their computer on the basis of five small loops of superconducting metal, which can be controlled with the help of ultrahigh-frequency radiation. It can not be said that these are powerful computers, because today they are more like "embryos" of what the future holds for humanity. But the fact that learned minds do not sit still and continue to actively explore this topic can not but rejoice.
