Researchers from universities in Singapore and Germany have discovered a way to turn RAM chips into a computing device. In fact, opening this would allow the computer to work without having a CPU in it. In this case, it should be noted that it is exclusively about the memory of the new generation of ReRAM (resistive memory with random access), which should go on sale in the very near future.
ReRAM, or RRAM, is a non-volatile memory that resembles CBRAM and PRAM technologies. The main essence of this technology lies in the fact that dielectrics at the time of applying high voltage to them are able to form conductive low-resistance wires inside themselves (although dielectrics have sufficiently high resistance). During the application of the appropriate voltage level, the conductive filaments are destroyed, again converting the material into a dielectric and turning off the conductor functions.
Among other things, the memory of ReRAM uses a ternary number system, which allows storing much more data in memory. Another advantage of this memory is the ability to produce it on a much smaller scale than the memory that exists today. This, in turn, will increase the speed of data entry and output and significantly reduce energy consumption. But on this list of advantages ReRAM does not end.
Researchers from the Rhine-Westphalian Technical University of Aachen and Singapore's Nanyang Technological University were able to create a new format for RAM ReRAM, which has at its disposal an additional space suitable for computational functions. In other words, scientists managed to transfer part of the computational operations from the central processor to free memory cells. The researchers themselves argue that in the future this technology will not only save computers and laptops, but also smartphones, tablets and other things from the Internet.
The developers argue that the technology they discovered can significantly increase the processing power and speed of computers, since the data will no longer have to be transferred between the central processor and the RAM. Also, the technology will significantly reduce the size of motherboards and save energy consumption, because instead of two components there will be only one.
