The other day, Apple has introduced a new version of the operating system for iPhones and iPad tablet computers - iOS 6 (it will be released in the fall). Earlier, Google Maps based navigation was used in this platform, however, the developers of the new version integrated the Apple Maps application based on TomTom maps. Everything would be fine, but the maps of Russia of this company are not very sophisticated - TomTom is a significant player in the USA and Europe, but obviously not here. Even Google Maps is not very well suited for our realities (mistakes and inaccuracies are found even in Moscow), and even TomTom maps are even more so. So the owners of the iPhone and iPad may soon have to think about alternative navigation. In this review we will consider one of the options - the program "Progorod".
The interface of this application is well drawn, most likely even an inexperienced user can figure it out. By the way, it is somewhat reminiscent of the foreign program iGO, which is perhaps the benchmark in the field of interfaces for navigation applications. In addition to the usual tips about the next maneuver (in which the direction and distance to the turn is indicated), the Junction View function is implemented in the Progorod. It works like this: when approaching a complex intersection, junction or ring, a photorealistic image of a section of a path appears on the screen of a mobile device, on which it is clearly indicated where to drive. In total, there are almost 6 thousand of such photorealistic pictures on the Progorod maps for Russia, this is the highest figure on the market.
The navigation program "Progorod" contains a base of points of POI, in total more than 30 categories (medicine, food, attractions, gas stations, service stations, etc.). These points can be added to the paved route either by using the search function, or simply by clicking on them on the map. Also in the settings you can choose the appropriate type of route: “short” (as soon as possible), “convenient” (along the main streets of the city) or “simple” (minimum of turns and difficult interchanges).
An important feature of the "Town" for the iPhone and iPad (as well as for Android devices and older models on the Samsung Bada platform) is support for the OpenGL 3D technology. It allows you to display on the display of the gadget not a regular map, but a three-dimensional and very well detailed one — that is, with three-dimensional buildings and taking into account the number of storeys of each building. With the help of "multitouch" technology, which is supported by the iPhone and iPad, you can rotate, tilt and scale the map with finger gestures in real time. It should be noted that all this “three-dimensional”, as well as online services (about them below), is available only for Russia developed by “Progorod”.
Meanwhile, the program has a catalog MapStore, which offers maps of all of Russia (entirely and broken down by region), as well as in 15 foreign countries - they are provided by the OpenStreetMaps community. There are maps of Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Kazakhstan, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Ukraine, Finland, Switzerland and Estonia. The map of all Russia has a volume of about 930 MB, a map of Ukraine - about 60, and, for example, a map of Italy - about 500. It is curious that, having paid $ 49.99 for a license once, you get access to maps of Russia, as well as all the listed countries - Such a model in navigation programs is quite rare, usually for additional maps have to pay extra.
As for the traffic jam warning service, the Progorod service is the cheapest in terms of traffic consumption in the Russian market. For example, during hour testing of Progorod, SitiGID and Navitel, the first spent traffic by 50 kopecks, the second - 9 rubles, and the third - 20 rubles, respectively.
As mentioned above, “Progorod” for iOS costs $ 49.99. Free full-featured demo version of the program is available for a period of one month.
