KolibriOS. A smart dwarf amid giants

KolibriOS

Do you know that…? The smallest modern operating system with a graphical interface (the development of which continues today) is currently KolibriOS, developed by an international group of programmers which includes 1c programmers, most of whom live in the CIS countries. It fits on a single 1.44 MB diskette. Since we have gone about unusual operating systems, we should say a few words about it.

The operating system is written in FASM assembler for x86 processors and is based on MenuetOS. It became an independent project in 2004. Considered by their creators as a hobby. This is stated on the English page of the project website. A kind of toy for those who had a computer accidentally strayed around the house, originally from the beginning of the century.

The graphical user interface is minimalistic, devoid of newfangled delights, but quite pleasing to the eye and does not impress guests from the past. The minimum requirements for a computer by today's standards are very modest: to run it, just 8 MB of RAM is enough. The composition of KolibriOS includes more than three dozen games, graphics and text editors, a browser, a library of drivers, as well as some other applications.
