Exactly 53 years ago, on November 30, 1959, the first two transistor large computers (mainframe) IBM 7090 were installed. They replaced the IBM 709 lamp models, intended for "large-scale scientific research and technological tasks." Such a computer already cost 2 million 900 thousand US dollars. It could be rented for 63,500 US dollars per month. It was a long time ago, but the first printer appeared even earlier.
The IBM 7090 uses 36-bit words. The address space of the mighty computer of those times was 32 kilobytes and could contain 32,768 words. The IBM 7090 was six times faster than its predecessor, the IBM 709.
Let's try to get an idea of the tremendous speed of a computer, as it was understood only half a century ago. IBM 7090 could in just one second perform 39 thousand 500 multiplication operations, or 32 thousand 700 division operations or 229 thousand addition or subtraction operations. And this miracle of technology debuted not so long ago by historical standards.
