According to a Sony representative, the announced Steam OS operating system and the associated hardware, which Valve is currently working on, may in the long-term outlook be a threat to new gaming consoles.
Fergal Gara, head of the British division of the Japanese company, in an interview with VG247 portal notes:
“In this market, you should always expect that someone will be able to present technologies that can compete with your product. Valve is a great example of this. ”
Gabe Niella is interested in creating its own ecosystem, which will work similarly to Sony’s plans with its consoles and games, as well as Microsoft with its Xbox content.
Gara adds:
“I have not yet had the opportunity to become more familiar with the details. But at the moment I can say that in general, they want to work in the same direction in which we ourselves work with our PlayStation. We should be more attentive to Valve and many other companies. We simply cannot afford to ignore them. Steam itself is an outstanding digital distribution service, so we’ll definitely keep our ears open. ”
The new Xbox One and PlayStation 4 use x86 processor architecture, which is why many game developers have already noted that creating new titles for these game consoles will be much easier compared to the previous generation of consoles.
At the same time, the PC market continues to grow much faster and offers much more development power than home gaming consoles. The same Nvidia predicts that just a year after the release of consoles from Sony and Microsoft, the top technologies used in them will no longer be such.
According to the plans of Valve, the company is going to release its own equipment for Steam OS somewhere in 2014. Beta testing of a limited number of first prototypes should start much earlier. So far it is still unclear what it will be like - a full-fledged gaming computer, game console, or something in between - a hybrid.
