As expected, the company Valve at the exhibition CES-2014 announced the names of its partners, who will be entrusted with the release of the first models of gaming computers of the Steam Machines series.
The first companies to produce Steam Machines under Valve's license will be: Alienware, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, Digital Storm, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, Gigabyte, Materiel.net, Webhallen, Alternate, Next, Zotac and Scan Computers. Also, the public were shown 13 prototypes of future Steam Machines from these manufacturers.
To date, the project Steam Machines is still in a state of beta testing. The first 300 lucky ones, specially selected by Valve experts, are already studying the pros and cons of the test models of this gaming computer, as well as the SteamOS operating system.
Digital Storm has demonstrated its own version of the BOLT II gaming computer, which runs on two operating systems, Windows and SteamOS. The computer is based on an Intel Core i7 4770K processor with liquid cooling, contains 16 GB DDR3 memory with a frequency of 1600 MHz, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti graphics card with 3 GB of video memory, a 120 GB SSD and an additional hard disk with a capacity of 1 TB. Such a “toy” will cost everyone in the 2584 dollars and go on sale within a month. The youngest computer model in a simplified configuration (i5 processor instead of i7, regular coolers instead of liquid cooling, etc.) will cost 1899 dollars. As the developers say, initially only the Windows operating system will be preinstalled on board the computer, and SteamOS will appear there only after the end of its beta testing phase.
Other companies also unveiled their versions of the Steam Machine computers, struggling to be competitive with the next-generation gaming consoles. For example, the company CyberPowerPC promises to release a computer based on SteamOS, which should make a strong competition to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One with a price tag of only 499 dollars. It is equipped with an AMD A6-6400K processor with a frequency of 3.9 GHz, an AMD Radeon R9 270 video card, 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard disk. Complete with each computer, of course, will be supplied and Steam Controller. There is also a slightly older model, equipped with an Intel Core i3-4330 processor with a frequency of 3.5 GHz and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 video card, but it will cost you $ 699. The first models of these computers should go on sale in the second half of 2014.
What will come out of this whole undertaking - time will tell. In the meantime, we can only closely follow the development of events. Apparently, Valve has already managed to attract close attention of a large number of manufacturing companies to its project, and this is already worth something.
