Seen earlier in the commercial for the movie “Star Trek Into Darkness” (“Star Trek: Retribution”), the flagship Acer Aspire R7 based on Windows 8 was introduced in America. At a special event in the city of New York, Acer showed a hybrid of an all-in-one laptop and desktop computer. A feature of the device is a 15.6-inch screen on a floating hinge, which the manufacturer calls "Ezel".
CNET news agency journalists managed to visit the premiere of the Acer Aspire R7 and get to know the computer in person. According to them, the Ezel technology allows you to rearrange the display of the laptop in a user-friendly position. At the same time, the mount is strong enough not to allow the touch screen to move during operation.
Although the Taiwanese manufacturer calls the Aspire R7 a novelty, HP unveiled the laptop with a floating screen back in 2007. But unlike the 20-inch HP Pavilion HDX, the R7's screen supports touch-sensitive touches and, more importantly, rotates 180 degrees, turning into a tablet. Thus, the screen can be shared with the person opposite.
With the release of the Windows 8 operating system last year, devices such as the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga with a bend back screen and the Asus Taichi with two displays appeared. Both laptops can be used as a tablet.
In addition to the rotating screen, one of the features of the Aspire R7 is the touchpad. If traditionally touch panels are located under the laptop keyboard, here the input device is located above it. This allows you to use the keyboard when the screen is folded. Acer found it convenient.
Sales Aspire R7 start on May 17 at the price of 999 dollars. The buyer will be offered a special version (“Star Trek Into Darkness”), which will be supplied with a free download of the game “Star Trek: The Video Game”.
The laptop is equipped with a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a Core i5 processor, 6 GB RAM and a combined storage medium: a 500 GB hard drive and a 24 GB solid state drive. Next is HDMI, an SD card slot, three USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and VGA and Ethernet connectors.
Last month, research firm IDC released a report that talks about the fastest decline in the personal computer market in its history. The company has been following the market events since 1994. As one of the reasons for the fall in sales, experts say the release of Windows 8, the new Microsoft operating system for computers and tablets.
"The new form factor, the touch capabilities of Windows 8, the revised user interface, the lack of the familiar Start button, and the costs associated with the production of touchscreen displays have made personal computers a less attractive alternative to specialized tablets and other competing devices," IDC Vice President Bob O'Donnell last month.
In addition to the Aspire R7, the Taiwanese company has released an Aspire P3 based on Windows 8 ultrabook, convertible into a tablet. The novelty is already on sale with a price tag of $ 800.
