A new computer virus can infect a PC with a microphone and speaker

Until recently, in order to completely protect a computer from external influence, it was necessary to disconnect it completely from the network - remove the cables or the wireless module. But now even this will not save your PC from intruders. Specialists from the Fraunhofer Communications Institute have developed a prototype of a virus that can be transmitted through a microphone and computer speaker.

Computer experts Michael Gaspach (Michael Hanspach) and Michael Goetz (Michael Goetz) conducted an experiment using five computers that were interconnected into a hidden acoustic network using built-in microphones and speakers. Data was transferred from one computer to another, until it reached a PC connected to an external network. As a result, they were able to transmit data over a distance of almost 20 meters at a frequency of 20 kHz at a speed of up to 20 bit / s, writes gizmag.com.

GUWMANET protocol was used to create the network, which was developed specifically for underwater communications. Naturally, at such a speed, the researchers did not manage to intercept a large file, but they managed to steal several passwords from the network. In the future, special acoustic filtering with a band-pass filter can be used to protect data.

At the moment, researchers say that it is still too early to worry about malware distributed in an acoustical way, but perhaps in the near future it will be much harder to protect your computer from danger.
