Overclocking - free performance?

Оверклокинг - бесплатная производительность?

Joy, surprise, euphoria. Here is an incomplete list of feelings that a person experiences, having received a free bonus to the purchased product. I went to the store to buy one pair of jeans, and got a second for free. It's very nice, is not it? But as we have known for a long time - free air only. I hope no one is surprised by the fact that all such "discounts" and "bonuses" are in advance calculated by cunning marketers. And the goal of all this action is a banal increase in sales or getting rid of leftovers. In any case, the commercial side of the shares can not be denied, even if you got excellent jeans "absolutely free" and everyone was happy.

Many people believe in "sail" and shares, you can not judge them for it. Especially girls! It's all about personal matters, goals and desire to get more. How does selling jeans refer to overclocking? Yes, just like Steve Jobs has to do with Apple. Let's focus and repeat the terminology. Overclocking is the process of increasing the frequency of a computer component in excess of the normal modes in order to increase the speed of its operation. Increasing the frequency can reach a maximum value, at which the stability of the system in the mode necessary for the user remains. In most cases, overclocking increases heat generation, power consumption, noise, sometimes the working resource decreases ( Wikipedia ).

Wikipedia again clever. But the essence is simpler. We increase the frequency of the processor directly in bios or with the help of third-party programs. If necessary, increase the voltage, and in the end we get an increase in performance. You should understand that I described the process in general terms, without specifying the details and all the "pitfalls". After all, as is known, there is no thin without good, as, however, and vice versa.

Increasing the frequency of the processor does give an increase in performance. But at the same time, energy consumption increases and, as a result, heat release increases. With a significant overclocking you will have to acquire a serious cooling system in the form of a huge radiator with a cooler of 120 mm and weight of half a kilogram. And if you want to achieve a serious result - prepare money for water cooling. I remember how such a monster hung on the motherboard of my computer, the board arched!

Among other things, do not forget about paying for electricity. A modern high-performance processor has an energy consumption of at least 60 watts. Approximately the same is consumed by a conventional incandescent lamp. But the PC does not only consist of a processor. There are still a lot of consumers. For example, a video card is the most gluttonous consumer: an average of 150-200 watts. And imagine that we broke up the video accelerator. Then, of course, they did not forget to overclock the RAM. We will take into account that everything is indicated not counting consumption of the chipset, hard drives and other peripherals. To be clearer, the consumption of a good gaming PC, overclocked "to red" can be compared to a constantly working toaster. Neither more nor less, and payment for electricity will increase.

Let's think about the nice sides of the overclocking. First, this process is very entertaining. This can be compared with car tuning. Constant search for optimal "spare parts", constant tests. The rejection of the best processors. And how many competitions there are! There are even known overclockers, whose name is called the entire line of computer parts, Fatal1ty, for example. This process is so large that it requires a separate article. Secondly, this is a good opportunity to get additional performance, which will add to the lack of power in heavy applications or games. I remember from my experience: there was a new "toy" with high system requirements - and my old PC almost smoked from overclocking. I always lacked a little bit to play at high settings or a little bit, so that in general I was drawn to minimum. This constant struggle for fps (the given frame rate per second) is now remembered with a smile. Then I spent a lot of money to curb the heat from the red-hot processors and RAM. It helped me to play games somehow. But in truth, it's a dubious pleasure when the coolers buzz in the ear and the system flies out periodically. It would be better to have a computer more powerful and quietly play in silence. Either spend more money and make an excellent project with well-chosen components and cooling.

In conclusion, I will tell you a secret. Although for many this is not a secret, as in the case of "free" jeans in the clothing store. So: manufacturers are trying so hard to make a huge amount of "overclocking" cooling systems, gamer graphics cards, a ton of RAM slots with cooling radiators and other things just for the sake of your money. This sounds trite, but the limit of the arrogance of manufacturers has recently gone off scale. If before it was a serious investment in the development of interesting and new products for enthusiasts, but now it's just marketing, as in the case of jeans on the stock. Manufacturers are so impudent that they now began to earn even on the selection of processors. The fact is that the processor chips in the production are different, although outwardly and according to the characteristics they are the same. Only their overclocking potential differs. In fact, manufacturers of the same graphics cards purchase graphics processors from NVIDIA and AMD at one price, and after the selection they sell more successful "stones" more expensive, creating special series of video cards. In addition, it is accompanied by a loud advertising campaign. Buyers of such "selected" processors are mostly enthusiasts-overclockers. It's such guys, without the "glass" for liquid nitrogen and helium, they do not go to overclocking competitions. But why is it to ordinary people, it is not clear? But still such video cards continue to be sold, and the price policy is simply enraging.

Previously, overclocking fans had the opportunity to choose the best copies for free, by means of simple overclocking tests. Now the "caring" manufacturing companies will do everything for you, but you need to add money. In general, overclocking has long been in the masses and has ceased to be a hobby geeks. Almost every student can buy a video card with the prefix "OC" (overclocked) and consider himself a cool overclocker. Although the overclocking, which is provided to such graphics accelerators, is in most cases available to everyone, even without the prefix "OC" and overpayment. Here everything is implemented for the common man in the street and is carried out by simple movement of the sliders: the processor frequency and the rotation speed of the cooler. Usually in such solutions, the frequency of RAM is tied to the frequency of the processor, which makes it difficult to overclock the video card's RAM. No alternative bios and replacement of cooling systems, no measurements of voltage and long tests. It's like buying a "hot hatchback": an ordinary car that has been slightly modified for you. All the fun of overclocking is a kind of computer handmade. And that means doing everything yourself.

But nevertheless children all over the world continue to "hurt" with the theme of dispersal. Even despite the decline in the popularity of fixed PCs, even with the growth of the number of "greenhouse" geeks, they continue to burn hundreds of processors every day, competing with each other in the skill of this dispersal.

It is beneficial or not to overclock your PC - it's up to you, of course. I just showed you the elements of this equation. There are both benefits and attendant problems. Everything depends on the goals. If you want to slightly increase productivity without significant costs - write in the comments, I'll tell you how to do it. If you are keen on overclocking or want to become an overclocking legend, the topic of benefit is not for you. If you just want to play a little on the weekends or use "heavy" applications at work - maybe you should take a closer look at the jeans from the new collection and close your eyes to the prices?
