The other day, Apple introduced the new MacBook, which caused a storm of emotions, both negative and positive, with its gold color, weak characteristics and only one port. It's called USB Type-C, or just USB-C, and promises to transform the devices we're used to into something new.
The future with laptops that have only one input - not counting the headphone jack - is like an aquarium with octopuses with one tentacle. Frightens and disturbs. How do I charge it? How now to connect to it that's all this?
These are just questions, but they can be answered by USB-C. And knowing the manner Apple pushes the revolutionary ports and adapters, let's not despair ahead of time.
Immediately after the Apple MacBook with this Type-C connector was introduced, peripheral manufacturers began to orientate on it. LaCie announced the upgrade of the Porsche Desigh Mobile Drive series of hard drives. Now they will be released with a new USB Type-C connector, but with a USB 3.0 interface, which is much slower than USB 3.1.
New hard drives from LaCie with USB-C will come bundled with an adapter cable that allows you to connect drives to laptops with the usual USB 2.0 and 3.0 connectors. On the shelves of the new hard drive will appear in late June.
What is USB-C, or USB Type-C?
A plug (or plug, or jack, or as you call it) USB-C in size corresponds to a micro-USB (8.4 mm by 2.6 mm), but is a wrap-around. Like Apple's Lightning connector, you can stick it upside down, and you will. In the dark it is very useful, there is no need to understand how the magic plug works, which sometimes does not fit even the third time.
Does it work like a normal USB?
It works like USB on steroids. First, it charges: USB-C can conduct bi-directional power flow. It can be used to charge the main unit or to charge the peripheral device. Also, it can cope with heavy loads, delivering 20 V to 5 A (100 W). This is more than enough to charge a laptop or several mobile devices at the same time.
USB-C is also faster than our current USB-B standard. Data can be transmitted at a speed of 10 Gbit / s, and if you have an adapter, USB-C will be compatible with the old USB standards. At the moment, the fastest devices with USB Type B transmit data at a speed of half as much.
How do I connect everything I need to the laptop? The port is the same.
But for this you need an adapter. Apple already offers several options: USB-C - USB (19 dollars), USB-C - HDMI and USB - VGA (both for $ 79). DisplayPort, Ethernet, SD card adapters and other standard connectors will soon appear, both from Apple and from third-party manufacturers.
However, Apple is betting that in the future you will have fewer and fewer things that you will need to connect to your computer, thanks to the proliferation of wireless networks, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Wireless headphones can already be listened to, wireless speakers are pretty much, wearable devices are more likely to be wireless and with wireless charging.
USB-C is one of Apple's marketing tricks. I hate Apple.
Regardless of your opinion about the company and its products, USB-C is not just another Apple proprietary connector. This is a new standard widely used in the industry, and very soon we will see a whole stream of devices with USB-C. Just a new MacBook from Apple - the first consumer laptop that runs on USB-C.
Who else uses USB-C at the moment?
Besides the aforementioned LaCie, Sandisk also makes 32-gigabyte flash drives with this type of USB. Hard drives from LaCie come in volume of 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB.
