This year was marked by many scientific breakthroughs, but the University of Colorado clearly wants to complete the 2015th big shake-up. Representatives of this university said that they were able to create the first processor that transmits data using light, not electricity.
The structure of the processor is not fully photonic, but its 850 optical input / output elements endow it with dizzying bandwidth in comparison with chips relying on one electricity - we are talking about 300 gigabytes per second per square millimeter, which is 10-50 times higher than the usual values .
The processor has a small size (only 3 by 6 millimeters) and two cores. Nevertheless, potentially a novelty can forever turn the market of computing power without having to reinvent the wheel. For example, based on it, you can create server machines that can skip huge amounts of data. Also, the new technology has ample opportunities for optimization, so we still have to see its real capabilities.
