EVE Online is known to us as a hardcore space simulator, in which you can instantly lose large amounts of money (for example, fifteen hundred dollars). This is quite a unique feature, but the game developer is working on an even more interesting option - if everything goes as planned, EVE Online will soon be known as a hardcore space simulator in which players dedicate thousands of man-hours to science while working on compiling the Atlas of Human Proteins.
The company-developer EVE Online in cooperation with the Swiss startup Massively Multiplayer Online Science and the University of Reykjavik has created the most scientifically useful game in history. For the players, this will look like a mini-game of image analysis - you will need to determine the shape and location of proteins in the images of cells obtained with a microscope. As a reward for participating in such a scientific work, EVE players will receive rewards in the form of in-game currency, loyalty points, and the pleasure that their participation in the game helped research ways of treating cancer.
This is not the first case of mixing video games and science, but this is definitely the most active approach - requiring the player to "turn on the brain", and not just using unoccupied computing power for scientific computing (such as [email protected]). This is a completely new way of involving gamers in scientific research, and he is genius.
