3200 prisoners were released ahead of schedule due to software malfunction

3200 заключённых досрочно вышли на свободу из-за программного сбоя

Authorities in the US state of Washington took the floor last Tuesday with an official statement in which they informed the public that the failure in the computer program led to the release of more than 3,000 prisoners ahead of schedule. This unusual story is rooted in 2002, when the Washington Supreme Court ordered the Ministry of Corrections to add to the reduction in the period for good conduct the time that the prisoner was serving in district prisons. But a computer error led to a wrong timing calculation.

For 13 years, the computer system uniting the state prisons of Washington mistakenly released prisoners on average 49 days earlier than the one set (one prisoner was released as much as 600 days earlier). Under the early release due to the fault of the computer malfunction were approximately 3200 prisoners serving time for crimes of varying severity. At the same time, they did not learn about the mistake at all yesterday. We knew about it practically from the very beginning of the work of the new computer program. But the elimination of errors in calculations was postponed until later, until the new head of state for information technology did not sound the alarm.

It would seem that this is so? You think, was released for a half-two or two months earlier. But in America, with this, everything is as strict as possible, so the authorities of Washington decided to take special measures. All prisoners who are released before the deadline, will have to sit this difference in prison. They will be offered two options: either to go to jail and spend time without interruption, or to go to jail for the night, and return to their daily life in the daytime. The second option was proposed by those authorities who already managed to get a new job and do not want to lose their seats. On January 7, 2016, they promised to fix the software bug.
