Authorities in the US state of Washington last Tuesday with an official statement in which they informed the public that the failure in the computer program led to the release of more than 3,000 prisoners ahead of schedule. This unusual story is rooted in 2002, when the Washington Supreme Court ordered the Ministry of Corrections to add to the reduction in the period for good conduct the time that the prisoner was serving in district prisons. But a computer error led to a wrong timing calculation.
For 13 years, the computer system uniting the state prisons of Washington mistakenly released prisoners on average 49 days earlier than the one set (one prisoner was released as much as 600 days earlier). Under the early release due to the fault of the computer malfunction were approximately 3200 prisoners serving time for crimes of varying severity. At the same time, they did not learn about the mistake at all yesterday. We knew about it practically from the very beginning of the work of the new computer program.
