KnuEdge was founded in 2005 by the former director of the US space agency NASA, Daniel Goldin. Over a decade, the company's specialists, working in strict secrecy, worked to create a fundamentally new processor architecture that could turn our perceptions of computers. Of course, we are talking about neurochips created in the likeness of the human brain.
Goldin managed to attract financing of his project in the amount of more than $ 100 million. The new processor, according to the representatives of the company KnuEdge, will be much more expensive than the solutions of other manufacturers, but its performance and low power consumption will pay off these costs in full. In traditional computers, the processor and RAM are separated and exchanged by a bus, which largely determines the overall speed of operation and is the "bottle neck" of the entire system. The design of the new KnuEdge architecture assumes a slightly different approach.
The first chip Hermosa, created in the processor division of the company KnuPath, contains 256 cores, imitating the neurons of the human brain. The connection between the cores and other elements of the system is implemented through the new LambdaFabric interface, which allows to significantly reduce the time delays. At the same time the system is scaled up to 512 000 such processors, which can work in parallel mode. And the delay in communication between them does not exceed 400 nanoseconds. The processor has built in 74 MB of cache memory, the bandwidth of which is 3.7 GB / s. The processor's performance is 256 GFlops / s with a power consumption of 34 watts. Chip Hermosa assures developers is 2-6 times more efficient than the processor solutions of other manufacturers.
