Computers occupy an important place in the life of modern society. The number of PCs and laptops sold is growing at a tremendous rate, as, indeed, the volume of energy consumed by these devices. If we take into account also the huge server farms, together with the most powerful supercomputers that absorb electricity as black holes, it becomes quite uncomfortable. A recently published report from the Association of Semiconductor Manufacturers made many experts wonder: Can we supply our computers with power in the near future?
Since 1990, the commission of leading experts of the industry, which included representatives of the 19 leading manufacturers of microprocessors, was a kind of map of electricity consumption by the appropriate equipment. Today in the association there were only representatives of four chip manufacturers: Intel, TSMC, Samsung and Global Foundries. The last report of this organization on the study of energy consumption of semiconductor chips is somewhat alarming, because, according to him, by 2040 we will not be able to power our computers. You can see everything on the diagram below.
Humanity is approaching the point where the economy (and not physics, as previously suggested by Gordon Moore) will become an obstacle to the further development of computer technology. The world's computer infrastructure already bites off a pretty decent piece of world energy. If you believe the experts, by 2040, humanity can not cope with the needs of computers in electricity. What will be beyond this mark on the chart - while guessing is difficult. Of course, for today it is only forecasts, and forecasts, as you know, do not always come true. But if the experts are right, humanity will have to change something either in the arrangement of computers or in the production of energy.
