Last week China launched TaihuLight, the world's most powerful supercomputer, with a performance of 93 petaflops. Recently it became known that the national laboratory of the Department of Energy in Oak Ridge (USA) will soon receive a supercomputer from IBM, which will be twice as powerful as the Chinese one. The delivery of the novelty is scheduled for early 2018, the performance of the computational giant in development is impressive - 200 petaflops.

Thanks to the outstanding capabilities of Volta graphics chips from NVIDIA, the new Summit supercomputer will be able to make the most of parallel computing capabilities, and IBM's openPOWER technologies will allow the computer to quickly and efficiently exchange data between processors, storage devices, computing racks and other nodes. The Department of Energy owns most of the US supercomputers used for scientific research, so it is constantly increasing its computing power and in 2018 expects the arrival of two more supercomputers.

One of them is called Sierra, with a capacity of about 150 petaflops, it will be installed at the Livermore National Laboratory. It is expected that it will be put into operation by mid-2018. Another supercomputer Aurora will appear in the Argonne National Laboratory near the end of 2018.

American experts say that the power of the components of supercomputers is important, but do not forget about their software component, so the American supercomputers, although not as powerful as the Chinese TaihuLight, still show very high results in the calculations.
