In all modern electronics, transistors are used. Despite the rapid development of technology, the very principle of the transistor has not changed much lately, but soon thanks to Qualcomm we can wait for a small technical revolution due to the appearance of a completely new type of transistor called NanoRing.
Earlier this year, Qualcomm experts, together with their colleagues from Applied Materials and Synopsys, conducted calculations of mathematical models of five new types of transistors of the next generation. Unlike modern electronic transistors, in which the main element is a silicon "rib", passing current in the switched-on state, NanoRing works differently. They are a "sandwich" of three silicon rectangular channels. Each such channel is surrounded by a layer of dielectric, covered with a metal layer of the control electrode - the gate. The supply of electricity to the gate changes the electric field in silicon, which allows the current to flow through it.
Despite the excellent results obtained in the calculation of mathematical models, it is too early to speak of a full-fledged success. The first tests of NanoRing should take place in 2018, and if they are successful - Qualcomm is going to develop a smartphone based on new transistors. If successful, it will be a phone that, for its work, will consume several times less energy than existing models while maintaining the same performance.
