The famous manufacturer of Intel processors made a lot of noise by announcing at the Computex exhibition a new family of Core X processors. The new family is headed by a monstrous 18-core 36-thread Core i9 processor, which, to this day, practically nothing was known except for it an impressive cost of 1999 dollars. Well, the manufacturer finally shared with us the details of the upcoming processor models, and also named the date of their coming on sale.
So, the 18-core processor i9-7980XE will run at a frequency of 2.6 GHz with the ability to overclock using Turbo Boost 2.0 technology up to 4.2 GHz. And with the help of Turbo Boost 3.0 this monster can be overclocked to 4.4 GHz. There would be a desire. Of course, this is slightly lower than the 4.5 GHz of the fastest desktop processor i7-7700K to date. This means that the new 18-core processor can play to its predecessor in performance, for example, in video games using CPU in single-threaded mode. But in an optimized for multi-threaded software and video games, hardly anyone will be able to make i9-7980XE a serious competition.
Looking at the other models of the Core X family, it becomes clear that Intel remains true to itself and a regular tendency is seen in the processors: the smaller the cores, the higher their frequency. The 14-core i9-7940X operates at 3.1 GHz, and the 10-core i9-7900X is already at 3.3 GHz. Journalists from the portal Engadget had time to test the 16-core processor of the new line in the benchmark Cinebench R15. The result was 3200 points, while the processor i7-7700K under the same conditions produced only 966 points. On the other hand, the 24-core Xeon E5 2697 has not been able to bypass anyone.
As for the date for the new processors to go on sale, 14 and 18-core processors will be available on September 25, and the 12-core i9-7920X will be available on August 28th. The rest of the line processors are available for order right now.
